VOX POP: Music

Music is often an expression of identity, it offers a sense of both self and the collective. Historically, music is a crucial part in distinguishing between and defining social groups; however, I feel there is more of a blurring between music preference and genres these days. Instead of subcultures deriving from distinctions in music preference such as Punk, Mods and Skinheads, youth subcultures are now often developed through social media with the recent Eboys/girls and VSCO girls/boys. Therefore, I asked 4 people what their preferred style/genre of music was and why to gain a sense of what peoples intentions are when listening to music and if there are any.

Q) What style/genre of music do you prefer and why?

Nicola Baird: “I listen to a lot of music via youtube, so I prefer dance music, anything that gets me of the computer and up and around.”

Nicola Baird, Journalist, Finsbury Park London, (C) Kimi Gill for Islington Faces

Sofi Natt: “I don’t think that I really have a favourite genre anymore, I like more or less anything, I have a playlist with absolutely everything on for when I can’t chose what I want to listen to, but I do have some playlists with certain genres for when I’m feeling a certain type of way. Even though I’m open to anything, I feel like I do typically go for pop punk or metal when I’m alone because not many of my friends are into it so I can jam without being judged.”

Sofi Natt, Student, Northampton

Charlotte Blunden: “I quite like soft psychedelic stuff because its easy listening and I like the fashion that goes along with it.”

Charlotte Blunden, Film Student, Essex

Neelam Tabassum: “I don’t really have a specific music taste, I listen to everything an anything! It all depends on my mood. If I’m feeling quite chill and just want some background music I’ll listen to something alternative or even R&B but if I’m full of energy then hip-hop or rap is definitely the way to go. I can just never chose.”

Neelam Tabassum, Student, Stratford London

It seems that more people are listening to different music depending on mood and accessibility as opposed to intentionally identifying with a particular style in order to fit in and belong to a certain social group.

Music: 7 of my favourite artists this year

Clairo- ‘Immunity’ Album cover 2019

Clairo- Her debut album ‘Immunity’ came out this summer, it has a soft indie/rock vibe whilst still including a heavily electronic sound on some of the songs which I really like, and the lyrics seem really honest of her own struggles that come across relatable to many I think. My favourite songs are ‘Closer to you’ and ‘Bags’- would recommend.

Solange- ‘When I get home’ Album cover 2019

Solange- I really love Solange’s album released this year- ‘When I get home’, specifically the earthy sounds on ‘Binz’ (Fugees vibes) and ‘Stay Flow’.

Brockhampton- ‘Ginger’ Album cover 2019

Brockhampton- “The best band since One Direction”. The 2018 album “Iridescence” was not my favourite possibly due to the issues that occurred around the group with a member leaving due to several accusations. However, “Ginger”- released this year- represented these hardships that the group went through, its very mellow, reflective and almost sad. The lyrics are really powerful and emotional. I really like it, and also love the Slowthai collaboration on ‘Heaven belongs to you’.

Ama Lou- ‘Northside’ Video 2019

Ama Lou- The single “Northside” released last month is honestly my favourite song at the moment. Not only because its about North London (where I’m from!) but becuase of its 90’s Destiny child-esque sound. I also really like the video- its simple but fun (features ASAP Nast and Odd Futures Taco). I am really excited for when she releases the album just like the background chit chat states at the end of the video.

Donna Missal- “This Time’ Album cover 2018

Donna Missal- I discovered Donna Missal this year through one of those Vevo adverts on Youtube that introduces artists. My favourite songs from the 2018 album ‘This Time’ are ‘Keep Lying’ where she reveals her powerful raspy voice whilst repetitively announcing the title lyrics and ‘Driving’ which is a more late night chill vibe.

Celeste- ‘Strange’ Video 2019

Celeste- Makes me cry! I love her voice and soulful sound. She gained more popularity this year with ‘Strange’. She is incredible live- the quiet pauses in her melody as well as her lyrics create a really special atmosphere and increase the likelihood of me crying.

Mattiel- NME Magazine

Mattiel- She gained attention after Playing at Glastonbury this year with Mark Ronson, I love Mattiel’s 60’s rock & roll vibe. My favourite songs from the 2019 ‘Satis Factory’ album are ‘Keep the change’ and ‘Je ne me connais pas’- I Love the video, she’s super creative and modern whilst keeping a retro sound.
